Casino Card Games Across Asia

Asia does have one casino card game that towers above the rest in at least one major market: baccarat.

In Macau, baccarat generated more than MOP 210 billion in gross gaming revenue during 2025. Blackjack generated about MOP 2.7 billion. The gap is so large that baccarat accounted for roughly 85% of Macau’s total gaming revenue when mass-market and VIP play are combined.

But Macau is not all of Asia. Move into India and games such as Teen Patti and Andar Bahar become much more culturally important. In the Philippines, Big Two is known as Pusoy Dos and sits within a wider social card-game tradition. Dragon Tiger appears throughout Asian-facing live casinos, while Pai Gow Poker has Chinese roots but a surprisingly American origin story.

There is therefore no literal seven-game popularity ranking for Asia. Baccarat gives us exceptional data, while the other games matter for different reasons depending on where the player is.

Which Card Games Matter Most in Asian Casinos?

The strongest approach is to separate what the numbers can prove from what regional history and casino availability tell us.

Game How We Know It Matters Who You Play Against What You Control What Changes the Cost
Baccarat Dominates Macau casino revenue House Banker, Player, or Tie bet Bet type and commission rules
Dragon Tiger Widely supplied by Asian-facing live casinos House Dragon, Tiger, or side bet Main bet vs side bet
Teen Patti Deeply established Indian gambling game Traditionally other players Betting, folding, seen or blind play Format and betting rules
Andar Bahar Traditional Indian gambling game now adapted to live casino play House in casino versions Andar or Bahar and optional side bets Which side and side bets are chosen
Pai Gow Poker Chinese Pai Gow ancestry adapted into a modern casino card game House How the seven cards are split House rules, commission, and hand setting
Big Two / Pusoy Dos Long-established social game in Hong Kong, Taiwan, the Philippines, and elsewhere Other players Which combinations to play and when Format, stakes, or platform fees
Poker Regulated casino and poker-room presence across several Asian markets Other players Extensive betting and hand decisions Rake, fees, opponents, and format

These games all belong in a guide to online casinos across Asia, but not because they can be ranked neatly from one to seven. They represent different parts of a very large region.

Is Baccarat Really Asia’s Biggest Casino Card Game?

Macau gives us the strongest reason to say baccarat sits at the centre of Asian casino gambling, but we should keep the claim tied to what the numbers actually show.

The Macau Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau reported MOP 142.65 billion in mass-market baccarat revenue during 2025 and another MOP 67.98 billion from VIP baccarat.

Combined, that is MOP 210.64 billion.

Macau’s entire gaming market generated MOP 247.40 billion that year, meaning baccarat alone contributed roughly 85% of total GGR.

For comparison, blackjack generated MOP 2.72 billion.

In Macau, baccarat is not simply the leading card game. It operates on a completely different commercial scale from blackjack and poker.

Why Is Baccarat So Different From Blackjack?

The player makes far fewer decisions.

In online baccarat, the main choice is whether to bet on Banker, Player, or Tie. Once the cards are dealt, fixed rules determine whether either hand receives another card.

Blackjack asks the player to hit, stand, double, split, or sometimes surrender. Those decisions can change the expected return.

Baccarat therefore combines very simple play with comparatively low house edges on its two main bets. Standard Banker is around 1.06%, while Player is around 1.24%. Tie is normally much more expensive.

Do Baccarat Roadmaps Help Predict the Next Hand?

No. Scoreboards such as the Big Road, Bead Plate, Big Eye Boy, Small Road, and Cockroach Pig display previous results and make streaks easier to see.

They do not change the cards remaining or make a Banker or Player result more likely simply because a pattern has appeared on screen.

The roadmaps are part of how many baccarat tables present the game, but previous independent outcomes do not become a prediction system for the next hand.

Does Macau Prove Baccarat Is Number One Everywhere in Asia?

No. Macau proves how dominant baccarat is inside one enormous casino market. It does not tell us what an Indian Teen Patti player prefers, what Filipino players choose online, or which live dealer game attracts the most users in Malaysia.

Once we leave Macau, comparable public game-by-game revenue figures become much harder to find.

That means baccarat deserves the first position in this article because the numbers behind it are exceptional, but the rest of Asia should not simply be treated as an extension of Macau.

Why Does Dragon Tiger Appear So Often in Asian Live Casinos?

Because it reduces a card game almost to its simplest possible form.

The Dragon side receives one card. The Tiger side receives one card. The higher card wins.

There is no hitting, splitting, drawing sequence, or hand-building decision. That produces extremely short rounds and makes the game easy to understand even for someone seeing it for the first time.

Dragon Tiger is consequently common across Asian-facing live dealer platforms, including those serving markets such as Malaysia.

What we do not have is a reliable public dataset proving that it is the second or third most popular card game across Asia as a whole.

Is Dragon Tiger Basically a Faster Version of Baccarat?

It has similarities, but the maths are different.

Both games ask the player to choose between two sides and both are resolved largely without player decisions after the bet is placed.

Dragon Tiger removes baccarat’s drawing rules and reduces each side to one card.

That simplicity can also make the side bets look tempting. Bets on ties, suited ties, card colour, or other special outcomes may offer large payouts, but the larger advertised prize usually comes with a much higher house edge than the main Dragon or Tiger bet.

Why Does Teen Patti Matter So Much in India?

Because Teen Patti existed as a social gambling game long before online casinos turned it into a studio product.

The name means “three cards,” and traditional Teen Patti is played between people around a shared pot. Players can choose whether to look at their cards or remain blind, continue betting, fold, or eventually challenge another remaining player.

It is closely related to the older British game Three Card Brag, but it developed into a major Indian gambling tradition with its own terminology and many local variations.

That makes it different from a casino game invented first and then marketed to Indian players.

Is Live Teen Patti the Same Game People Play Socially?

No. This is one of the most useful differences for players to understand.

Traditional Teen Patti is normally player against player. The pot is built from the players’ bets, and decisions such as playing blind, seeing the cards, raising, folding, and calling for a show are part of the game.

Many live casino products use the Teen Patti name for a house-banked game closer to Three Card Poker. The player competes against the dealer rather than the other people at the table.

The cards and hand rankings may look familiar, but changing who the player competes against changes the game.

That is worth checking when comparing Teen Patti tables at India online casinos.

Does Teen Patti Have One House Edge?

No. Traditional player-versus-player Teen Patti does not have a conventional casino house edge because the house is not taking the opposing hand.

A platform may still charge fees or otherwise monetise play.

House-banked live casino versions are different again and can use their own dealer qualification rules, payout tables, and side bets. Those rules determine the casino advantage.

Giving “Teen Patti” one universal house-edge percentage therefore mixes different games together.

How Does Andar Bahar Work?

Andar Bahar is far simpler than Teen Patti.

A dealer places one card face up, then deals cards alternately to two sides called Andar and Bahar until another card of the same rank appears. Players bet on which side will receive that matching card.

There are no hand rankings to learn and no decisions after the wager is placed.

The game is traditionally associated with India and is believed to have originated in Karnataka before being adapted into online and live casino formats.

Does Andar Bahar Involve Skill?

No, not in the way blackjack, poker, or traditional Teen Patti does.

The player chooses a side before the cards are dealt, but cannot influence where the matching card appears.

Modern casino versions may add side bets on the number of cards dealt or other outcomes, but those create additional wagers rather than strategic control over the cards.

Why Can Andar and Bahar Have Different Odds?

Because one side receives the first card after the initial matching target is placed.

That order can create a small mathematical difference between the two sides depending on the exact casino rules and how commissions or payouts are structured.

This is why players should check the actual payout table instead of assuming that two visually equal sides must always have identical expected returns.

Is Pai Gow Poker Really a Chinese Casino Game?

Not exactly.

Pai Gow Poker is inspired by Pai Gow, the much older Chinese game played with Chinese dominoes. But the card game found in modern casinos was developed in California during the 1980s.

Sam Torosian, who ran the Bell Card Club near Los Angeles, is generally credited with developing and popularising the modern game in 1985. Contemporary reporting from the Los Angeles Times traced how the game mixed Pai Gow ideas with poker hands before spreading to casinos internationally.

So the name and underlying concept have Chinese ancestry, but Pai Gow Poker itself is a modern American casino hybrid.

How Does Pai Gow Poker Work?

The player receives seven cards and divides them into a five-card high hand and a two-card low hand.

Both are compared with the dealer’s corresponding hands. Normally the player needs to win both comparisons to win the overall wager, while winning one and losing one produces a push.

Those frequent pushes give Pai Gow Poker a different rhythm from baccarat or Dragon Tiger. More hands can finish without either side winning the main wager.

Does Setting Your Pai Gow Poker Hands Matter?

Yes. The player cannot change which seven cards arrive, but can change how they are divided between the two hands.

Making the strongest possible five-card hand is not always the correct decision because the two-card hand also has to compete against the dealer.

That gives Pai Gow Poker a meaningful decision after the cards are dealt, unlike baccarat or Andar Bahar.

Why Is Big Two Called Pusoy Dos in the Philippines?

Big Two spread through several East and Southeast Asian card cultures and is known by different names depending on where it is played.

It became particularly established in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, and the Philippines. In the Philippines it is generally known as Pusoy Dos.

Players try to get rid of all their cards by beating the previous play with a higher single card, pair, or multi-card combination. The two is normally the highest rank, which gives the game its English name.

It is one of several regional card games that also appear around online casinos that accept Filipinos, although its cultural popularity should not be confused with proof that it is a leading house-banked casino product.

Why Doesn’t Big Two Have a Normal House Edge?

Because the traditional game is player against player.

Your decisions affect when to use strong cards, when to pass, which combinations to break apart, and how to stop an opponent from emptying their hand.

If money is involved, the operator may earn through fees, rake, tournament charges, or a modified casino format rather than by taking the opposite side of every wager.

This makes a standard baccarat-style house-edge percentage the wrong way to describe the game.

Is Pusoy Dos the Same as Pusoy?

No. The names are easy to confuse in the Philippines, but they refer to different games.

Pusoy Dos is the local version of Big Two, where players try to get rid of their cards through increasingly strong combinations.

Pusoy is a different 13-card game in which each player divides their cards into three poker-style hands.

The shared name does not mean the rules are interchangeable.

Where Does Poker Fit Into Asian Casino Culture?

Poker has an established presence in several major Asian casino markets, but it plays a very different role from baccarat.

Macau’s 2025 figures show this clearly. Texas Hold’em Poker generated MOP 975 million in GGR, while Stud Poker generated MOP 988 million. Both are meaningful casino products, but they are tiny beside baccarat’s combined MOP 210.64 billion.

The Philippines also has a regulated poker-club sector. PAGCOR licenses dedicated poker sites as well as regulating poker inside casino operations.

That gives poker a real commercial presence without making it a region-wide challenger to baccarat.

Why Doesn’t Poker Have the Same Kind of House Edge as Baccarat?

Because players normally compete against one another.

The casino or poker room generally makes its money through rake or tournament fees rather than trying to beat every player’s hand.

The player’s results therefore depend on the opponents, betting decisions, table selection, cards, and variance as well as the cost charged by the operator.

This is why poker belongs within the wider real-money card games landscape but should not be compared with baccarat using one house-edge number.

Are These Games Available at Licensed Asian Casinos?

It depends on the country and the operator.

The Philippines provides a useful example of how broad regulated casino supply can be. PAGCOR regulates licensed land-based casinos and poker operations, while its casino rules cover games including baccarat, blackjack, poker variants, and Pai Gow Poker.

That proves those products can sit inside a regulated Asian casino market.

It does not prove Filipinos play each one equally often.

Why Doesn’t Casino Availability Tell Us Which Card Game Is Most Popular?

Because the casino controls what it offers.

A live dealer supplier can distribute the same Dragon Tiger or baccarat table to dozens of operators. A casino can carry Pai Gow Poker because its platform already supports it. Neither fact tells us how many players actually choose those games.

Macau’s revenue figures are unusually valuable because they measure money generated by individual game categories rather than simply showing what was available.

This is why baccarat can be discussed with much greater confidence than most of the other games on this page.

Which Asian Card Games Give the Player the Most Control?

Poker, traditional Teen Patti, Big Two, and Pai Gow Poker give players meaningful decisions after the cards arrive.

Dragon Tiger, baccarat, and casino Andar Bahar are much more dependent on the wager chosen before the outcome unfolds.

That does not make one type inherently better. It changes what the player is actually doing.

A baccarat player is mostly choosing the mathematically preferable wager. A Big Two player is continually deciding how to manage a hand against other people. The fact that both use playing cards hides how different the games really are.

Which Asian Card Games Have the Lowest House Edge?

There is no fair answer across every game because several do not have a conventional house edge at all.

In standard baccarat, Banker at roughly 1.06% and Player at roughly 1.24% are relatively inexpensive casino wagers.

Traditional Teen Patti, Big Two, and poker are normally player-versus-player games, so fees, rake, opponents, and playing decisions replace a fixed house advantage as the more useful comparison.

Dragon Tiger, Andar Bahar, and Pai Gow Poker depend on the specific bet and rules offered by the casino.

Asian Casino Card Games FAQs

What is the most popular casino card game in Asia?

Baccarat has the strongest commercial case. In Macau, mass and VIP baccarat generated about MOP 210.64 billion in 2025, roughly 85% of all casino GGR. Comparable continent-wide data does not exist for every Asian market.

Why is baccarat so popular in Macau?

The official numbers show that it dominates revenue, but they do not prove one single reason why players choose it. Its simple structure, rapid resolution, low house edge on Banker and Player, and long-established place in Macau casinos all help describe the product without assigning the dominance to one cause.

Is Dragon Tiger more popular than baccarat?

There is no reliable Asia-wide dataset showing that. Dragon Tiger is widely available on Asian-facing live casino platforms, but Macau revenue data puts baccarat on an enormous commercial scale.

Is Teen Patti a casino game?

Traditional Teen Patti is a player-versus-player Indian gambling game. Casinos also offer house-banked live versions using the Teen Patti name, and these can play quite differently.

Is Andar Bahar based on skill?

No. The player chooses which side will receive the matching card but cannot influence the order of the deck.

Did Pai Gow Poker originate in China?

No. It was inspired by the traditional Chinese tile game Pai Gow, but the modern card version was developed and popularised in California during the 1980s.

Is Big Two the same as Pusoy Dos?

Yes. Pusoy Dos is the common Philippine name for Big Two. It should not be confused with Pusoy, which is a different 13-card game.

Does Big Two have a house edge?

Not in its traditional player-versus-player form. Real-money platforms may instead charge rake, fees, or tournament costs.

Is poker popular in Asian casinos?

Poker has an established regulated presence in several Asian markets, including Macau and the Philippines. In Macau, however, its revenue remains far below baccarat.

Why Asia Does Not Have One Card-Game Culture

Macau gives us an unusually clear answer to one question. Baccarat is enormous there. Its 2025 revenue was almost 78 times blackjack revenue and vastly greater than the revenue generated by the individual poker categories.

But the rest of the region quickly becomes more complicated.

Teen Patti and Andar Bahar carry Indian histories that existed before their casino adaptations. Big Two travels through Chinese-speaking markets and appears in the Philippines as Pusoy Dos. Pai Gow Poker looks ancient because of its name, yet the card game itself emerged in 1980s California. Poker sits inside regulated casino markets while retaining a fundamentally player-versus-player structure.

These games all use cards, but the similarity largely ends there.

Baccarat shows us how commercially dominant one card game can become, while the rest of Asia shows why a continent this large cannot be reduced to one casino preference.
