Nine-Count Blackjack Strategy: Full Review

According to Martin J. Silverthorne, it’s possible to make $94/hr playing blackjack at home if you follow the ‘Nine-Count Blackjack strategy’ which he has developed. He claims that his system offers a whopping 91.1% win rate when players follow it and best of all, all you need is a bankroll of $60 to get started.

Usually when something sounds too good to be true, there is a simple reason – because it is! However, let’s give it a try and subject in to an in-depth, impartial analysis so we can find out for sure.  Here it is, Gamblers Pro’s Nine-Count Blackjack Strategy Review.

In short, the strategy is made up of two parts; one being the nine-count blackjack playing strategy and the other being the nine-count blackjack betting method. Learning both of these will, it is claimed, help you to make thousands of dollars each and every week without fail.

The Nine-Count Blackjack Playing Strategy

The strategy Silverthorne uses is, of course, very similar to the basic strategy for playing blackjack. Below is a table of the basic strategy for European Blackjack which is provided courtesy of www.wizardofodds.com

european blackjack strategy

The only differences to the above playing strategy and the Nine-Count strategy are as follows:

Doubling Down

  • Player’s 10 vs dealer’s 4, 5, 6, or 7
  • Player’s 9 vs dealer’s 5 or 6

No information is given in the book about how to play 5, 5. The European Strategy suggests to double down from 2 through to 9. For the purposes of our strategy test we followed only the information given in the book, hence doubling would only occur if the dealer was holding 4, 5, 6, or 7 against our 5, 5.

Splitting Pairs

Although, Silverthorne’s book suggests to always split aces and 8s, he does state that if we are playing internationally, which I assume European blackjack is, then we should follow the same rules as in the above table.

The Nine-Count Blackjack Betting Strategy

A lot of what the Nine-Count Blackjack Betting Strategy is built upon is what Silverthorne calls the ‘Profit Advantage Bet’. He claims that for every 100 hands of blackjack played, a player can expect to win 47.5% of them with the casino claiming 52.5%. However, his studies of thousands of simulated hands produced a record of 48.5% winning wagers which directly followed a single winning wager. To put that in understandable English, after winning one single wager, he won 48.5% of the time on the next wager. This is why he has named the second wager as a ‘Profit Advantage Bet’.

Although, we at Gamblers Pro have not done such extensive testing as Silverthorne, we would seriously question as to why this should be the case and surely the law of blackjack’s house edge would apply and the win rate would be the same 47.5% over the long haul for any wagers at any given point in the game.

Regardless of what we think, the Nine-Count Blackjack Strategy uses this ‘Profit Advantage Bet’ by stating that it is statistically proven (through his own testing) that a player will win more second bets and so it the strategy says to parlay any single bet winnings on to the next hand.

Here is the betting system Nine-Count Blackjack employs:

Level 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
Bet $5 $5 $5 $10 $10 $20 $20 $40 $40

This betting series starts with a $5 wager at level 1. If you lose that bet you move onto level 2 which is also $5. Lose level 2 and you move on to level 3, again another $5. Lose level 3 and you move on to level 4 which is now a $10 bet.

Now you win level 4, you must parlay that bet meaning your $10 original level 4 bet and your winnings, another $10, totaling $20 is to be bet on the next hand. If you win that bet then you go back to level 1 and begin the sequence again. The bets are set up so the parlay win offsets the previous sequence of losing bets.

If you lose the level 4 parlay bet, you move onto level 5. Therefore the basic idea is that you have to win two hands consecutively (back-to-back) to break the casino and return with a profit. But, you only get 9 levels for this to happen. If you reach level 9 and you lose it is game over and most likely you have ran out of cash or you will be nearing the casino’s house limit if you go on much longer.

Testing the strategy in real game-play

For our review test, we used 2 online casinos: Royal Ace and Planet 7 and we played European Blackjack. We broke our play down into games, as Mr Silverthorne suggests players to do. A game is classified as; achieve $50 profit equals a winning game or run out of levels (9) means we lost. Some games, we chose to stop just shy of $50 on $47.50 or $45 this was due to wanting to use the toilet or a third party interruption. We played 16 games, 8 at each casino, which totaled 332 hands (if we split a hand, then the split is counted as 2).

The table below gives an overview of our results

Excluding pushed hands (332 – 33 +299) our win percentage was 47.492% and loss was 52.508%

According to our sample figures, our strategy was in-line with the win/loss percentages Silverthorne mentioned in his book where he mentions a 47.5% win / 52.5% loss ratio.

We won 11 of the 16 games for a game win percentage of 68.75%. Although this sounds impressive, it is way short of the 91.1% that Silverthorne claims to have gotten using the Nine-Count strategy. Plus, as you can see, when we lose the hit is much harder than that of a win – meaning we ended up with a net loss of $172.50.

All the details of each game can be found below the summary which clearly states our level, the amount bet, the dealer’s up card, our starting hand (given in number form), the action we took (how we played the hand), our finishing hand (if we ‘hit’), whether we won or lost the hand and our overall game balance.

Summary

Based on our findings, we do not believe that it is possible to make money using this strategy so don’t go quitting your day job just yet – sadly.

While the betting strategy makes sense, the requirement to win 2 consecutive hands in such a short space of time cannot be guaranteed and as you are required to move onto the next level if you do not win the second bet (the parlay), you will soon find out that this strategy is destined to empty your bankroll more severely than it does to increase it. On the whole, we have to give this strategy the big thumbs DOWN. Sorry chaps!

Details of Games Played using the Nine-Count Blackjack Strategy

Listed below are the details of the games we played when carrying out this review. We played 16 games in total. Games 1 – 8 were played at Royal Ace Online Casino while games 9 – 16 were played at Planet 7 Online Casino. In total we played 332 hands (including splitting).

A win is classified by achieving a profit balance of $50 (on some occasions we settled for $45)

A loss is classified by completing the 9 levels, hence losing the 9th level bet.

Key:

In the ‘Betting level’ we use ‘p’ to indicate when the ‘parlay’ bet was placed. Ex. 2 (p) = level 2 parlay

In ‘Action’ we use ‘H’ for hit and ‘S’ for stand

Doubles and splits are mentioned in the ‘Additional bet’ column

For simplicity, ‘Our starting hand’ is represented by a combined number for the 2 cards we were dealt. We have indicated if it is a soft hand by using (s).

From our starting hand, if we had to ‘hit’ then we played following the rules of the nine-count playing strategy, which means we either bust or stood when we got to the required number according to the dealer’s card.
