Retro Tapes – An Old-School Vibe with Plenty of Big Wins
Retro Tapes Cluster Link is a modern slot that’s been gifted with an old-school look and feel. Developed by Push Gaming, the creators of Jammin Jars, Retro Tapes is a six-reel, nine-row video slot that uses a cluster link mechanic instead of traditional paylines.
As you’d imagine, the game board is packed with cassettes that look like they’ve been pulled straight out of the 1980s. However, as with all of the best online slot games, Retro Tapes is loaded with hit features that make it super fun to play.
Cascading Reels
Most cluster pays slots use cascading reels, so it’s no surprise to see this integrated into Retro Tapes. The idea of cascading reels is that when a winning cluster is made, the symbols (involved in the win) disappear. This allows the symbols above to cascade down and new ones to drop in and complete the 6×9 grid.
Cascading reels are one of my favorite base game features because they give players a chance to land multiple wins from a single spin. This enhances the gaming experience, and it feels like I get more value from the slot.
Wild Tape Symbols
As the name suggests, the Wild Tape symbol is the game’s wild. It performs the normal function of substituting other symbols (except for Magnets and Wild Multipliers) to create or enhance winning clusters.
All Wild Tape symbols carry a multiplier, which starts at 1x. When it is part of a winning cluster, the Wild Tape keeps its place on the grid while the other symbols disappear. Also, the multiplier increases by +1. This multiplier is unlimited. It stops when no more wins are possible.
Wild Multiplier Symbols
The Wild Multiplier symbol is shaped like a star. It can appear in both the base game and the Top Charts bonus round. When a Wild Multiplier symbol lands on the reels, it passes on its multiplier value, which can 1x, 2x, 3x, or 5x, to all Wild Tape symbols. After that, it changes to become an Instant Prize symbol with a mystery payout.
Instant Prize Symbols
The possible values of Instant Prize symbols are 1x, 2x, 5x, 10x, 25x, 50x, 100x, 250x, 500x, and 1,000x. When part of a winning cluster, these symbols act as multipliers. However, players get a straight payout multiplied by their bet amount when the instant prize comes from a Wild Multiplier transformation.
Magnet Feature
Retro Tapes also features a Magnet symbol. When this appears on the reels, it transforms into one of the paying symbols and attracts all matching symbols towards it. This function helps to create cluster wins from otherwise non-winning spins.
The Magnet can also attract Instant Prize symbols into clusters to help boost the payouts on regular spins.
Top Charts Free Spins Bonus Feature
Three or more Wild Tape symbols will trigger the Top Charts free spins bonus. The number of free spins depends on how many Wild Tapes land on the reels. You can win 6, 8, 10, or 12 spins.
Once active, all Wild Tapes and Instant Prize symbols from the base game spin transfer to the free spins round, where they remain locked in position. During Top charts, the remaining spaces on the reels start blank, with the following possibilities occurring on each spin:
- Wild Tape symbol – These act as they do in the base game, with an extra of awarding two additional free spins whenever one lands on the reels.
- Wild Multiplier symbols
- Instant Prize symbols
- Magnet symbols – Once more, these can attract Instant Prize symbols to where it’s located
- Extra Spins symbol – Awards players with one or two more free spins. It then transforms into an Instant Prize symbol
- Blank Tapes – These have no value, in effect, a non-winning symbol
It was the Top Charts feature from which Daniel Agassi hit his Retro Tapes max win, highlighting the super payout potential of this bonus round.
