A recent poll has revealed that a small majority of Americans favour turning sports gambling into a legal, nationally regulated industry.
The poll, conducted by Farleigh Dickson University in New Jersey, interviewed 1,019 adults, revealed that the majority favoured legalizing, whereas 39% of respondents opposed it.
While most Americans currently have to rely on placing wagers against friends and family around major sporting events, there are four states which do offer some form of legal sports gambling – Nevada, Oregon, Delaware and Montana. New Jersey is currently undergoing a battle to see sports betting fully legalized in the state, a battle which has gone all the way to the Supreme Court.
It’s estimated that $150 million was spent last year on illegal wagers, the majority of it on NFL matches.
What do you think? Should America legalize sports gambling?
